Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK)
When small amounts of pure astigmatism (mixed astigmatism) exist, small strategically placed partial thickness incisions in the peripheral cornea can be used to correct the focussing error. These incisions are performed manually using a guarded diamond tip knife. This procedure has extremely low risk with rapid recovery. Astigmatic keratotomy is most frequently used as a means of fine tuning results of laser vision correction and refractive lens exchange procedures.
