There are two kinds of laser vision correction: LASIK and PRK

1.

LASIK (laser assisted in situ-keratomileusis) involves the formation of a thin (0.16-mm) corneal flap (using a microkeratome) under which the laser treatment is performed. This flap re-adheres to the cornea rapidly without the need for stitches. LASIK is indicated for all refractive errors correctable by laser vision correction.

2.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) or surface laser involves treatment after removing the corneal epithelium which heals in the following 48-72 hours.

This procedure is generally performed when the cornea is too thin or slightly too irregular to perform LASIK.

With both PRK and LASIK the higher your prescription is initially, the longer your vision will take to recover and the greater the potential for additional surgery to refine the results.

Our clinical staff will help advise which procedure is better for you.

Alternatives to LASIK and PRK.

There are a number of alternatives to LASIK and PRK. These include eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, eyeglasses and contact lenses may adversely affect people's lifestyles and contact lens wear may not be a viable option for some people. There are also other forms of laser surgery, lens implant surgery and synthetic inserts into the cornea among other surgical options. They are best reserved for situations where LASIK and PRK are not possible as they usually carry a greater risk or longer recovery times. They can be discussed with the optometrist and surgeon if LASIK and PRK are not deemed suitable.
