The idea of refractive surgery has been around for over a hundred years, with first suggestions documented as early as 1898. Ophthalmologists began reshaping the cornea to correct refractive errors over 50 years ago. The excimer laser was first used to correct optical errors in the 1980s.
The excimer laser has an internationally documented reputation of accuracy and safety since 1987.
In Australia, excimer laser commenced in 1989. Short and medium term results indicate that the treatment is effective and predictable with low risk in patients who meet the criteria. Late onset problems have not been reported.
Over forty countries currently use laser vision correction and millions of people worldwide have undergone the procedure. It is estimated that over 2,500,000 laser vision correction procedures will be performed this year alone.
